      Founder & President

      Royce Brown is the Founder and President of READ AfterSchool. READ AfterSchool grew out of his passion for children, their learning and the overwhelming need for an environment supportive of homework during afterschool care.  Royce has been teaching physical education in Hillsborough County Public Schools for 24 years, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Physical Education from the University of Tampa. He is also a swim coach at the club, high school and college levels. Royce is proud to provide a quality afterschool care program that meets the recreational, academic and nutritional needs of students.

      Devon Young has worked with READ at Ballast Point for the past four years, spent time in the classroom interning at Ballast Point Elementary School, and holds her degree in  education from the University of Tampa.  She loves helping the children develop at READ and loves the amazing connections she and her colleagues are able to make with students during recreation, and by helping with school work.

      Beth Monsour taught Kindergarten in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where she lived for over 20 years before moving to Tampa 6 years ago. She earned her education degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and is a huge Tarheel basketball fan! She took some time off while raising her three children but continued her love of educating children through volunteering, being active on PTA and Governance Boards in North Carolina and South Tampa and substitute teaching at her children’s preschool.   In her spare time, she is often seen either at a swimming pool, lacrosse field or soccer field cheering on her three children. Beth is very excited to join the READ team and can not wait to get to know all the students!

    • Gail Peterson

      Gail Peterson is originally from Chicago and has had a successful 46-year career as Director, Human Resources & Compliance, a 15-yr background as Sunday School Teacher & Puppet Ministry Director where she has published many of her kid-friendly scripts and, has a 12-yr background of teaching horseback riding to kids and adults. Gail moved from St. Charles Illinois to the Tampa area in 2017 to be with her daughter and two young grandchildren. She currently works part time mornings as Admin Assistant to Senior Listing Partner at Re/MAX-The DuncanDuo Team. In her spare time, Gail spends time with her daughter, grandkids. She joined the READ team in August, 2018 and enjoys working with all the kids and instructors and especially her Kindergarten Class!

      Debbie Scott has been teaching for 24 years in Hillsborough County and currently teaches 3rd grade Math and Science at Ballast Point Elementary School. She spends her summers working with students of all ages at Circle C Ranch and previously worked with the City of Tampa Recreation Department.  Mrs. Scott believes in making learning fun and incorporates games into many of her activities.  Just ask her students!

      Michelle Johnson is the Assistant Site Manager at Ballast Point.  She has been serving the needs of ESE students in Hillsborough County at Tampa Bay Blvd Elementary, Dale Mabry Elementary and Ballast Point Elementary for over 20 years. Michelle has that rare gift, that “It” factor that helps her make deep connections with the READ students and loves to share their development with parents. Michelle has the uncanny ability to heal a student’s personal “boo boos” while making it a teachable moment. On any given day, you will find a student running up to Michelle telling her how their day went.

      Ally Byrne is a senior at the University of Tampa completing her final internship student teaching full time in first grade! Ally has previously been a preschool teacher and currently nannies part time and in the summers. Ally has been a part of the READ team for two years and loves every minute with the kids here!

      Rachel Cacace is a junior student at The University of Tampa majoring in secondary education with a concentration in biology. Rachel enjoys biking throughout Tampa and looking for dolphins in the bay. She has spent the last few years tutoring and mentoring students and she is looking forward to working with the students at READ.

      Emily Champagne is a junior studying secondary education major with a focus in math at the University of Tampa. She has spent the past few years babysitting and volunteering at different schools whenever possible. Emily loves working with and getting to know all of the kids at READ. She has learned more from being with them all the time than she has from any of her classes and cannot wait to see them grow even more.

      Gabrielle Highlander is a junior at the University of Tampa studying Human Performance and Exercise Science.       Anastasia McGrath is an elementary education major, and Spanish minor at The University of Tampa.  As the oldest of six children her interest in helping others was sparked early.  “I had so much fun spending the last 10 years tutoring, babysitting, and volunteering in nursing homes and schools.”

      Deena Trankina has a master’s degree in business and worked in the telecommunications and advertising industries. She is a certified yoga teacher, received her training at Kripalu Center in Massachusetts. She has taught yoga for over 20 years in New York City, Atlanta, and Tampa, and teaches READ students yoga during recreation time.

      Carol Martin Brown

      VP / COO

      Carol Martin Brown handles many of READ AfterSchool’s behind-the-scenes processes such as finance, HR, and communications.  She attended Columbia University Teachers College, earned her MBA from Columbia Business School, and is a certified public accountant.  Carol is passionate about education, and served as the Chief Financial Officer for a number of education organizations, including The New Teacher Project (TNTP) – a national K-12 education nonprofit, and the University of South Florida’s Innovative Education unit.
